: Building and texturing billiard balls (NURBS and Decals in 3D Studio Max) |
Now that we have all the elemnts in place let's create for first the ball model for the balls from 1 to 8. (The full colored balls). For that we will need only the sphere and the circle.
Select the NURBS sphere and attach the circle to it.
Now right click the modiffy pannel and choose [Create Curves]. In the Create Curve rollout click on the [Vector Proj.]. Now select the circle that you just attached and then select the sphere surface. It is very important to do this in the laft viewport as it will create a vector projected curve on the surface and the result is depending on the angle of your viewport. You will see that the elements turn into a blue color when selected.
If you did it all ok - you shoud be able to see a new circle On the surface of the sphere.

You can now do the same thing from the other side of the sphere to create the second round surface. It's just the same thing just looked from the Right viewport. (Right like not Left)
| 4. Separating the sections |
If you look at this ball model you will see that it has 3 sections: one main section with a color coresponding to the ball number and 2 sections with the ball number. In order to separate the 3 sections we will need to select the main sphere and trim the other 2.
For this you will select the ball and clone it into 2 more without moving it. Now you have 3 spheres: Main Surface, First and Second number. You should rename those surfaces aswell.
Select the "Main Surface" and hide everything else. Go in sub-object / Curve and select one of the projected curves. Right click the modifiers pannel and select [Vector projected curve] as in the image bellow. Use [Trim] and [Flip Trim] to create a hole in the main surface. Do the same with the second projected curve to obtain 2 holes in the surface.
