 :: Tutorials : Creating a realistic desert scene in 3D Studio Max

NOTE: This tutorial is for 3D Studio Max 5 and for other versions, please see the Discreet Documentation. This tutorial is easy as difficulty. For this tutorial you will need no external file or plugins. THIS TUTORIAL WAS CREATED BY JAFAR DAHSTI EXCLUSIVELY FOR 3D.SIBIUL.RO -ALL RIGHTS RESERVED-

  In this tutorial we will try to obtain a realistic image for a Desert Scene, including Sun and Lens Effects. Below you can see the result of this tutorial.

Realistic Desert Surface

   1. MODELING THE DESERT SURFACE

  Create a plane in top view and set parameters to: Length : 500 Width:500 / length segs : 40 , width segs : 40
  Select move tool from main toolbar and press F12 to open move transform window set x,y, and z to 0.0.
  Now add a noise modifier to plane01 and set parameters to: fractal : on , roughness : 1 , interations : 2.5 , and in straingth group set Z to 17.
  To make the surface smooth you will add a mesh smooth modiffier to plane01 and set interations to 1.0 .
  In the perspective viewport you must have this:

   2. CREATING THE CAMERA

  Create a target camera from lights&camera tab. Select move tool then press F12 and set parameters to: x : 46 , y : 235 , z : 9 , dolly : 84.
  Now select the target of camera and set position to: x : 14 , y : 157 , z : 11.
  Now go in perspective viewport and Press [ C ] to switch to camera view. You should see a picture very similar to this one:

   3. LIGHTNING THE SCENE

   Create an omni light from light&camera tab. Select move tool and press F12 then set: x : -278 , y : -528 , z : 90.
   Create another omni and set position to: x : -258 , y : 266 , z : 67.

In the next page we will create the sun effect using Lens Effects.
